Do You Know The Answer?!

A man goes into a hardware store.
He goes to buy something.
He says to the man at the counter, "How much for 1?"
The man says 20p.
He says "How much for 12 then?"
The man says 40p.
So he says, "How much for 122?"
The man says 60p.

What was he buying?

If you think you have the answer, please let me know in the comments! Good luck! :)
